This location has been known as the Randolph County Poor Farm, Infirmary, and Asylum at various points throughout its long history. This place was a home for people who had no one to care for them, people who need an “asylum” or a safe place to live where they could get the care they needed. The location functioned as a self-sustaining 350-acre farm through most of its existence.  

 Edinburgh Manor a opened as “poor farm" in the 1800's. Almost a hundred workers died on the grounds and were buried in an eerie cemetery on the property. The poor farm was closed down, and a mental institution was built on the property in the early 1900s.

The Historic 60,000 Sq. Ft. Building at 406 10th St. in Brodhead WI. also Known as “The Old Middle School” was originally built in 1906 to serve as the towns High School, an addition was built in 1939 and it then housed all grades K-12 until it was remodeled in the late 1970’s to be used solely as the Middle School until it’s closure in 1996.

The Coles County Poor Farm was located in Charleston Township near the small town of Loxa, Illinois. In 1870, the county purchased 260 acres from A. N. Graham in Section 35 of Ashmore Township for a new farm, which sat astride the Indianapolis & St. Louis Railroad.  Now named Ashmore Estates, this building has a long history of being many different institutions.
